Subtract from shape removes fill of masked item

Hello, Anyone know why subtract from shape would suddenly start applying the background item's attributes to the foreground item? I have a CD cover that I am trying to mask a shape inside circle, of course. I have used Illustrator since 1986 and this is extremely frustrating. There are four shapes I need to do individually, and the no-fill, black ruled circle applies its attributes to any one I try to mask. The fill in each object is CMYK, no rules, not complex, just a rectangle being masked by a circle. :? cheers
